    USS SARATOGA CV-3 naval cover with a postmark from Newport News. VA dated Sept 30, 1979. Blue photo of carrier at sea in 1944 printed on cachet #1815 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964.

    USS Saratoga was an early 888' Lexington Class aircraft carrier, that fought in the Solomon Islands and was torpedoed by an enemy submarine. She survived the war and was sunk as a target at Bikini during the atom bomb tests. The proud vessel earned eight Battle Stars in the Pacific Theater.
